Drywall’s types & Its Applications

Drywall is a versatile construction material used to create or cover walls and ceilings. It’s available in various types, including mold-resistant, soundproof, and VOCs absorbent. After WW2, the housing boom fueled the demand for a quicker wall construction method, and drywall stepped in. And to this day is one of the most popular interior wall finishes.

This blog post will share with you drywall most relevant types and its diverse applications in construction, so you can make informed decisions for your remodeling project. Let’s start.

What’s Drywall?

Drywall is a construction material formed by a gypsum core between two sheets of thick paper. It’s great for wall and ceiling installations due to its lightweight yet sturdy components. Drywall comes in different girths and sizes to suit different needs. The most common drywall is ½ inch thick and four feet wide, but it can fit any size using a saw.

6 Types Of Drywall You Should Get Familiar With

If you’re planning to start a remodeling project or build a new home from scratch, there are different types of drywall available on the market you can take advantage of. Here are the 6 most popular types of drywall:

Standard Drywall

Standard drywall is the most common type of drywall used in construction. It’s the first call for commercial and residential construction due to its versatility and fair rate compared to other construction materials.

  • Suitable for walls and ceilings.
  • Ideal for finishing basements.

Fire-Resistant Drywall

The Fire-resistant drywall gypsum core has been treated with fire-retardant chemicals. This formula makes it ideal for use in utility rooms, garages, and areas near a furnace or wood stove.

  • It prevents the spread and speed of fire.
  • It Generates less smoke than traditional drywall.
  • Required by many building codes.

There are 2 prominent types of fire-resistant drywall, Type X & Type C. Type X gives up to one hour of protection from fire thanks to its 5/8″ thickness. Type C provides the advantage of not shrinking when burning, making it ideal for ceilings.

Soundproof Drywall

Soundproof drywall is a compound of wood fiber, gypsum, and polymers that increase the sound transmission class. Soundproof drywall is ideal for insulating living spaces, such as shared walls in apartment buildings.

  • It has a noise-dampening core.
  • It can be as thick as 5/8-inch.
  • For best soundproofing, combine soundproof drywall with fiberglass insulation.

Plasterboard Drywall

Plasterboard works as a base for plaster applications. It’s excellent for home restoration projects to look at lath and plaster. Plasterboard requires a thin coat or coats of plaster for its installation. The absorbent paper face allows the plaster coat to stick to the drywall.

Mold Resistant Drywall

This drywall features a paper backing thicker than regular drywall and a special coating to help prevent mold build-up in moist or humid areas.

  • It helps extend the appearance of interior surfaces in wet or humid areas.
  • An excellent choice for bathrooms and kitchens.

Voc-Absorbing Drywall

The newest addition to the drywall family, VOC’s absorbing drywall captures volatile organic compounds, traps them within its walls, and breaks them down into inert compounds. VOCs are gasses emitted from paint, varnishes, caulks, adhesive, etc. Some VOCs can cause cancer.

  • It remains effective even after being painted or covered with breathable wallpaper.
  • Testing shows it’ll continue working for up to 75 years.
