Drywall vs. Sheetrock

If you’re a homeowner in the Greater Houston Area, you’ve probably heard the terms sheetrock and drywall. But what’s the difference between the two? And which one should you install in your home improvement project?

This blog post will clarify any confusion and explain the differences between sheetrock and drywall. We’ll also talk about the different applications for each material depending on its thickness.

What’s the Difference Between Drywall and Sheetrock?

Drywall is a panel made of gypsum plaster pressed between 2 sheets of thick paper to make walls and ceilings. Sheetrock is a drywall brand patented by the US Gypsum Company. There are no practical differences between these 2.

Drywall

Made from a very light yet sturdy rock known as gypsum. Modern drywall pulverizes gypsum into a fine powder and presses it between two large pieces of paper to form a board or sheet.

Sheetrock

Sheetrock tends to be the go-to drywall choice for most contractors and seasoned DIYers. Many builders perceive sheetrock provides a better quality product and is easier to work with than generic brand drywall. Sheetrock products list includes fire-resistant panels and drywall tools bearing the Sheetrock brand name.

Uses and Applications for Drywall/Sheetrock

Drywall/Sheetrock is a common material for walls and ceilings. But, depending on their thickness (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 In), they are installed for different purposes. Let’s get to know them better:

1/4 Inch: It’s excellent for curved walls or walls that don’t need reinforcement. This is the thinnest drywall available. Its girth allows it to be more flexible, especially when wet.

1/2 inch: Most contractors use 1/2 inch drywall or sheetrock in kitchens, basements, bathrooms, and throughout the home. This one is considered the standard.

3/4 Inch: You’ll find it used in bathrooms for a bit more reinforcement. 3/4 is not typically used elsewhere unless the room needs extra support.
